How much does online therapy cost? What you pay now and after the first month

Online therapy subscriptions are usually priced per week and billed monthly, and the first month is often discounted, so the price you see first is not the price you keep paying.

Short answer: At Online-Therapy.com (OT), plans are listed at about $48, $72 or $96 per week in the first month, and about $60, $90 or $120 per week after that (as listed in November 2026; check the final price at checkout). By our estimate that is roughly $208 to $416 for the first month and $260 to $520 per month afterward, depending on whether you want no live sessions, one per week or two per week. OT does not bill insurance directly, but you can request receipts and apply for financial aid at checkout.

First month vs renewal: the numbers

OT lists prices as weekly equivalents. To turn those into monthly figures we use weekly price x 52 / 12 (about 4.33 weeks per month). If your account is billed every four weeks instead of every calendar month, multiply by 4; we show both so you can see the range. These are our estimates, not OT's published monthly prices.

Prices as listed in November 2026, rounded. The first month includes an automatic 20% discount (code THERAPY20 if it is not applied). Taxes or currency differences may apply. Check the final price at checkout. Plug your own figures into the therapy cost calculator.

Year-one estimate. If you stayed for 12 months on the same plan, our estimate (one discounted month plus 11 regular months, using x52/12) would be about $3,068 on Basic, $4,602 on Standard and $6,136 on Premium. Most people do not need to commit to a year, and you can cancel any time, but it helps to see the total if therapy goes on longer than you expected.

Cost per live session (a rough comparison)

A subscription bundles messaging and worksheets with sessions, so "price per session" is not a perfect measure. Still, if live time is what you value most, it helps to divide:

Premium is only better value per session if you will use both sessions. If you skip one most weeks, Standard costs less for the same contact. Our plan chooser helps you weigh this.

Insurance, receipts, HSA and FSA

Financial aid

Students, veterans and people on low income can apply for financial aid during OT's checkout. OT decides who qualifies and how much the reduction is, so you will not know the amount until you apply. Our financial aid guide explains the steps, what to ask about renewal pricing and what to do if you are not approved.

How this compares with in-person therapy

We have not found a recent, reliable national survey of US self-pay therapy fees that we are comfortable quoting, so we do not give a single "average session price." What we can say:

To compare fairly, multiply a provider's session fee by how many sessions you expect per month, then compare that with the subscription total in the table above.

A quick budgeting example (illustrative)

Made-up numbers to show the method. Not a recommendation.

Someone wants weekly live sessions and has a budget of $400 per month.

  • Standard first month: about $72 x 52 / 12 = about $312. Within budget.
  • Standard from month two: about $90 x 52 / 12 = about $390. Still within budget, but only $10 to spare.
  • Premium from month two: about $520. Over budget.

So Standard fits, Premium does not, and if money gets tight later, the options are applying for financial aid, switching to Basic (losing live sessions) or looking at lower-cost care. Planning for the month-two price, not the month-one price, avoids a surprise.

Frequently asked questions

How much is online therapy without insurance?

At Online-Therapy.com, listed prices in November 2026 are about $48 to $96 per week in the first month (with the automatic 20% discount) and about $60 to $120 per week after that, depending on the plan. That works out to roughly $208 to $520 per month on our estimate. Check the final price at checkout.

Why is the second month more expensive?

The first month includes a 20% introductory discount. From the second month you pay the regular price, which is about 25% higher than the discounted first month. Budget for the renewal price, not the first-month price.

Does Online-Therapy.com take insurance?

No direct insurance billing. You pay yourself and can request itemized receipts to submit to your insurer for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Whether you get anything back depends on your plan, so ask your insurer first.

Can I use an HSA or FSA?

IRS Publication 502 lists payments to a psychologist and therapy received as medical treatment among medical expenses. Whether a specific online therapy subscription qualifies under your account is a question for your plan administrator or a tax adviser.

Can I cancel after the first month?

OT says you can cancel or change plans at any time. Check the cancellation terms and next billing date in your account before the renewal date so you are not charged for a month you do not want.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

It depends on the therapist, your location and your insurance. With good in-network coverage, in-person or telehealth therapy through your insurer may cost you less. Without insurance, compare a provider's per-session fee times the number of sessions you expect against a subscription's monthly charge, using our cost calculator.
